Wayne W. Dyer, he was talking about <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">doing something today, just for today. <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">That <\/span><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">makes in manageable.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For instance, if you want to stop drinking alcohol, if you want to stop eating sugar, if you want to start exercising, reading, writing, \u2026 no matter what you would like to achieve, if you <span style=\"color: #333333;\">do it just for today<\/span>, if you start with one thing, just for today, you have already set the first foot in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">We often don\u2019t start changing our lives, because it feels so overwhelming, it feels undoable, it feels as way too much.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We would like to be fit, but we don\u2019t start exercising.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to stop drinking alcohol or stop smoking, but it seems impossible to grasp the idea that we can never have a drink, or a cigarette again.<\/p>\n<p>We would like to write a book, but we are convinced that we can\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>This doubt, this lack of trust in being able to do something, is popping up every time we want to change our habits.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">But if we do this new behavior for one day, just for today, we know we can.<\/span><\/strong> We believe we can do it. We engage in this new habit because <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">we know we will manage for just one day.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And that is the start of many days, of a life, with this new habit.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to stop drinking alcohol, don\u2019t have a drink today.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to quit smoking, don\u2019t smoke today.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to eat more healthily, don\u2019t eat any sugar today.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to write a book, write 10 lines today.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be more fit, go for a walk today.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Do this new behavior for one day.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">In the evening, feel how proud you are, because you did it.<\/span><\/strong> Enjoy the feeling of having made the first step towards the life you would like to live.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">The next day, set the same intention.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Setting small, achievable goals**, makes you start.<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve started, keep going.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Keep doing this until it\u2019s become a very natural part of your life.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I talk*** a lot about our conscious and subconscious mind, you won\u2019t be surprised, I mention it here again. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Our subconscious mind, our Protective Self,<\/span> does everything in its power to <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">keep us doing things we know, things we\u2019ve done before.<\/span> So, every change, even good ones, are seen as hostile, as to be avoided, as the subconscious mind can\u2019t find a previous, similar behavior, and therefor does not know what signals to give us.<\/p>\n<p>But, luckily we have <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">our conscious mind<\/span>, the mind that we can steer, the mind that <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">is open to new situations and new behavior.<\/span> We need to do our new behavior today, with our conscious mind telling us what to do. That will already provide our subconscious mind with one experience. The next day, we do it again, with our conscious mind. And we get another experience for the subconscious mind. <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">We keep repeating this until our subconscious mind does not see our new habits as strange, as unknown, any more.<\/span> That\u2019s the moment we have created a new habit, a new pattern in our life. It has become a natural habit, something we know, and <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">that\u2019s when it becomes easy to keep it up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">This works for all kinds of behavior.<\/span> <\/strong>Whenever you want to act differently, feel differently, think differently, <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">make a conscious decision<\/span><\/strong> to do so. <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Practice<\/span> <\/strong>the way you want to think, feel and act, every day, until it has become your \u2018normal\u2019, your natural way of being.<\/p>\n<p>Rachel Macy Stafford**** wrote a beautiful book \u2018Only Love Today\u2019 in which she reminds herself and her family to be loving and kind, every single day. No matter what happens today, react in a loving and kind way. I have put this title on the whiteboard in our kitchen:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">\u201cOnly Love Today\u201d.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This simple reminder will make the difference in every situation you will encounter today. Just this reflection of <strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">having a choice<\/span> <\/strong>in how we behave, makes all the difference in the world. Choose to act in the way you want to act, in the way you are the person you like to be, in the way that you set out for yourself to be(-come).<\/p>\n<p>Choosing how you want to be as a person, is the same intention, as the intention to change the other behaviors mentioned before, eating more healthily, exercising, not drinking, learning something new, &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If we start our day, saying, only love today, we set the intention of being kind, compassionate and loving towards everyone today.<\/p>\n<p>And when we do this every day, we start being a kinder, more loving person. And isn\u2019t that our ultimate goal? To be a kind, loving person?<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">My invitation to you all this week is:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Think about what you would like to change<\/span>, about what you would like to achieve in your life, on every level of your being.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Make a list<\/span> if there are more than one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Choose one for now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">See what you can do today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Do it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">In the evening, reflect on your day, write down what you\u2019ve achieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Set your goal for the next day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Do this every single day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Have an accountability partner if you like. That can help you to keep going.<\/p>\n<p>But most of all, <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">enjoy what you\u2019ve done, be proud of yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I know, we\u2019re only human, and we may slip up some times, but when it happens, acknowledge the slip up, let it go, and set your goal for tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Keep going.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">The journey of a thousand miles, begins with one single step. <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Lao Tzu.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your goal in mind, know why you want to achieve it, and keep behaving in the way you will reach it.<\/p>\n<p>Once you feel it has become a new habit, choose something else from your list.<\/p>\n<p>I wish you all, the courage, the joy, and the perseverance, to change into the person you really want to be.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Think about the joy you\u2019ll feel when you\u2019ve become that person<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Feel this already, every evening, when you reflect on the day, and realize what you\u2019ve achieved today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff9900;\">Keep going, just for today, and do this day after day.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thank you all for reading me, and for supporting me on Medium!
